Debt collectors can't wait forever to hit you with suit

The statute of limitations on debts varies from state to state from as little as three years to as long as 10 years. In New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, a debt is time-barred after six years. Debt collectors or creditors can still ask you to pay old debts, as long as they follow federal law. The law prohibits debt collectors from engaging in any unfair, deceptive or abusive practices while collecting debts.

However, they can't do much if you refuse because they cannot take you to court. If they try, all you have to do is tell the judge that it's a time-barred debt.

I'm absolutely afraid of being poor, so I save like a crazy person, but I'm trying to learn how to save and invest in things that will bring me a better return than a regular savings account. Good luck on the budget thing...it's tough!
